Legionnaires’ Disease Cases

Legionnaires’ disease is an acute pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacteria that can exist in dirty or stagnant water. People can contract Legionnaires' disease by breathing in a mist or vapor (small droplets of water in the air) that has been contaminated with the bacteria. According to the Centers for Disease Control, between 8,000 and 18,000 people are hospitalized with Legionnaires' disease in the U.S. each year. However, many infections are not diagnosed or reported, so this number may be higher. Legionnaires’ disease can first present itself with flu-like symptoms, but these symptoms can get increasingly worse and eventually be fatal.
