Details of the Case

1) Lebrawn Rankin was an eight-year-old boy with cerebral palsy who passed away in 2018 due to severe neglect from his mother. He weighed just 23 lbs at the time of his death.

2) In August 2021, authorities indicted Lebrawn’s mother, Zedria Rankin, on manslaughter and aggravated child abuse charges.

3) Many view the tragedy as a failure of the Alabama Department of Human Resources for ignoring numerous neglect reports from Lebrawn’s school.

4) Holding DHR accountable in civil court can encourage authorities to take future reports of child abuse or neglect more seriously.
