A serious collision can affect nearly every part of daily life and leave a family facing far more than a damaged vehicle. Medical appointments, missed work, and uncertainty about the future can quickly become part of everyday life. Trying to understand an insurance policy during that time adds another layer of stress. Asking questions about your coverage now is one way to be better prepared.
You may not think much about your auto insurance beyond paying the premium, but after a serious car accident, questions about your coverage become urgent. Morris Haynes Attorneys at Law partner Jeremy Knowles joined WVTM to discuss understanding your insurance coverage and protecting yourself both before and after a crash.
Uninsured/underinsured motorist (UM/UIM) coverage helps protect Alabama drivers when an at-fault driver has no insurance or insufficient coverage. It can cover medical expenses, lost income, and pain and suffering up to policy limits. Alabama drivers can waive it through a written rejection, but doing so leaves you financially exposed. Alabama’s minimum bodily injury liability coverage is only $25,000 per person, which often falls far short after a serious crash. Additionally, roughly 1 in 5 Alabama drivers operate without any insurance.
Consider taking a few minutes to review your coverage with your insurance agent. Ask what your policy covers, what limits apply, and what protection you have if another driver has no insurance or too little coverage. Getting clear answers now can help you make more informed decisions.
If you’ve already been injured, you may have a different set of concerns: how to manage mounting expenses, what to do about an insurance claim, and whether you need legal help.
At Morris Haynes, we understand that these questions are personal. Behind every injury case is someone whose health, livelihood, or family life has been disrupted. We’re here to listen to what happened and help you understand your legal options.
We’re proud to serve Alabama and to participate in conversations that help our neighbors become better informed.
