Clay Hornsby graduated from the University of Alabama Law School in 1988 and began practicing law for Spain and Gillon in Birmingham for six months, Schmitt and Harper in Tallassee for three and a half years and for Morris Haynes for twenty-two years. He returns to the firm in 2020 after serving as Deputy Director of the Alabama Law Institute where he identified areas of Alabama law that were confusing, contradictory, and archaic. He worked with selected attorneys, professors, and judges to update, simplify, modernize, and amend these areas by amending statutes and proposing laws to the Alabama Legislature for passage.
For the past four years Clay also served as one of the coaches of the University of Alabama’s Trial Advocacy Competition team which competed around the country in mock trials. These experiences have provided him with a broad knowledge of the law as well as the practical trial experience to better help evaluate and represent clients more effectively in court.
Clay has been President of the Alabama Association for Justice (formerly Alabama Trial Lawyers) and the Fifth Judicial Circuit Bar Association covering Tallapoosa, Chambers, Macon and Randolph counties.
He is a member of Super Lawyers, Best Lawyers in America, the Alabama Law Foundation, Top 100 Lawyers in the State of Alabama, The National Trial Lawyers, Elite Lawyers of America and the College of Master Advocates and Barristers. He has spoken at numerous legal seminars throughout his career.
